Artificial Intelligence has been making a lot of headlines lately.
Love it or loath it, AI is becoming more and more prominent in so many areas of our lives. Let’s take ChatGPT, for example, it really is an impressive tool, it can generate articles, documents, even poems, and much more in a matter of seconds. Many business owners have also started using it to quickly produce content for social media.
How do you feel about that? Can you sniff out AI-created content in a matter of seconds?
Personally, I think AI’s are great tools to generate ideas if you are stuck, but I’m not sure that AI-generated content will be as authentic, as well-written, and created content by a human – with a personality.
The newest AI ‘kid on the block’ even offers business headshots and LinkedIn profile pictures at a price us professional headshot and brand photographers can’t compete with. For only $20 you can get 100 headshots, featuring different clothes, hairstyles, and backgrounds.
Will this mean that professional headshot and brand photographers will be out of the job?
I’m not hanging up my camera yet! To be honest, I don’t think you can replace the personal touch, vision, and creativity a professional photographer brings to the table. But let’s have a look at how good AI headshot technology really is.
To save you said $20, I selflessly signed up and turned myself into a guinea pig.

The results made me giggle, while some of the images have a distant resemblance to me (or perhaps my evil twin), none of them actually really looked like me. It did somehow manage to show my smile and cheekbones pretty well. But all of the images look overly retouched with super smooth, fake skin. Next to that, the other issue is the fact that some of the hairstyles, clothes, and colour schemes are just not me at all.
I spend a lot of time with my clients to speak about their brand and how everything about their photo session needs to be on-brand and show who they are. The AI-generated headshots would definitely not do that.
In some pictures the AI also tried to remove my glasses – the emphasis on tried… – and I seem to have funny limbs and body parts. But, I’ll let you be the judge, what do you think, do I really look like this?
Imagine you don’t know me, if you saw one of these images on my profile online, would you recognise me at a networking meeting? I have my doubts…
I showed the images to some of my friends to see what they thought, and most of them had a good giggle as well. Here’s what they said: You look like an American news presenter or actor. They look totally fake and not like you at all. They don’t show your spark. They don’t really show your personality… And the list goes on, but you get the idea.

Based on my experiment, AI technology has definitely come a long way and can do amazing things, but it just can’t replace the human touch, the ability to capture emotions, and the attention to detail that a professional photographer brings to a photo shoot.
So, am I worried about my job? No, not yet at least! Because here’s what I can do for you that AI can’t:
