I never thought I’d find myself signing up for a dating app, but here we are…
Let me tell you, it’s been an interesting experience! My first impression? Hmm, a bit mixed. There’s been no shortage of dodgy messages and sooooo many bad profile pictures. As a photographer, this has been amusing but also a bit painful.
When you go onto a dating app, first impressions are everything. In a split second, people decide if they’re intrigued enough to know more about you or if they’ll keep swiping to find someone more intriguing. Our first decision, whether to swipe left or right, is purely based on what we see and whether we find what we see attractive. That might feel really superficial, but the reality is that visuals play a massive role in making that first connection.
In my short time on the platforms, I’ve already seen it all, blurry images, photos of body parts but no face, and images standing next to an ex who’s strategically cropped out… However, what I’ve rarely seen are good profile pictures that actually capture the person and say something about them.
